Local team completes Organ Donor Awareness DASH
May 9, 2007 – In support of National Organ Donation Awareness Month, four local walkers, along with 4,000 participants, completed the 12th Annual DASH for Organ Donor Awareness on April 22nd.
Each day, 18 Americans, over 6,000 each year (twice the number lost on 9-11), die due to the lack of available organs. Organ recipients are selected based on medical need, location and compatibility. Here in the Philadelphia area there are over 5,000 people waiting for an organ, yet only about 100 receive one each month. One organ donor can save or enhance the lives of 50 people. You can designate that you are an organ donor with the Department of Motor Vehicles on your driver's license, just be sure to inform your family and loved ones of your wishes to become an organ and tissue donor.
