Wilson Health Information finds independent pharmacy customers significantly more satisfied with their diabetes treatment among prescription filling patients.

NEW HOPE, PA – (PR NEWSWIRE) – August 21, 2001 – Diabetic patients reported significantly higher diabetes treatment satisfaction when they used independent pharmacies to fill and refill their prescriptions according to the new WilsonRx® Pharmacy Survey. The survey also found that patients were most highly satisfied with their heart and cancer treatment and least satisfied with their nail fungus and weight loss treatment among the 35 conditions studied. The survey also found significant differences in treatment satisfaction depending upon the pharmacy, pharmacy benefit and health insurance plan used by patients.

“These findings appear to support the case for reimbursement for pharmacy services, particularly where it can be demonstrated that patients believe they are more satisfied with their treatment when they receive pharmacist counseling for complex conditions such as diabetes,” said third generation pharmacist Jim Wilson, President of Wilson Health Information. “Pharmacies such as Medicine Shoppe and Safeway have recognized and effectively addressed a number of these different needs.”

Overall, the Medicine Shoppe chain of independently owned and operated franchise pharmacies was rated highest in overall customer satisfaction to fill and refill prescriptions. Supermarket pharmacy shoppers were most satisfied with Safeway to fill new prescriptions and Kroger to have their prescriptions refilled. Discount pharmacy customers were most satisfied with Target to fill new prescriptions and Kmart for refills. CVS was the most frequently mentioned chain and the Merck-Medco mail pharmacy was the eleventh most commonly reported.

Regionally, Wal-Mart was highest rated in Atlanta. In Boston, Albertsons Osco Drug was #1. Target was the top rated pharmacy used to fill new prescriptions and there was a tie between Kmart and Target in Chicago. In Dallas, Albertsons was the top rated pharmacy to fill and refill prescriptions. Wal-Mart was top rated in DC. In Los Angeles, Albertsons Sav-On Drug was #1. Eckerd was highest in New York. In San Francisco, Walgreens was the highest to fill new prescriptions and Walgreens and Longs tied to refill prescriptions.
